Chicago 2016 Olympics - Police Protest

Friday - Mar 27, 2009 - 11:20 AM

The Chicago Fraternal Order of Police has announced that it may organize a protest during the upcoming April visit of the International Olympic Committee in Chicago. The protest would be in response to the Mayor Daley's decision to cut back a proposed salary raise. If no agreement is reached before and the protest actually is executed it may have a negative effect on the Committee impressions about the city's preparedness for the serious olympic challenge.
This is the second recent initiative on the part of the Chicago Police that undermines the city's efforts to improve the public image of the local police force. Last week the same police organization has voted no-confidence for its chief Jody Weis. Weis has been nominated by Mayor Daley to serve a 3-year contract.
It remains to be seen how the relationship between the Chicago police and Daley develops but there are definitely some interesting dynamics to watch.

Do They Have To Buy US Dept?

US currency - source: PoliticalBlog.us

I have found an interesting article recently publish in the EHZ Zurich. It describes a very pessimistic and graphic at the same time vision of the US stimulus package in action. The tile is "There Is No Zombie Free Lunch" and yes, if you haven't figured it out already, zombies are the US banks and financial institutions. As much as I enjoyed the read, I have to admit that the author has missed one very critical point in his "analysis". And I hope you will share my view after you read the text, but the big point that the author misses is the fact that nobody is obligated to purchase the US debt. As far as I know there are no mechanism that can be implemented to enforce such purchases, especially not on an international scale. People, nations and banks choose to purchase US debt because they consider it a good investment. And that's the fundamental rule that I couldn't see mentioned in the referenced article. Please check it out.

Hamas Israel War - Two Winners

Thursday - Mar 12, 2009 - 10:20 AM

It is not the first time in the history that two sides of the conflict declare a victory at the end of it. Traditionally that has hardly ever been the real case. Reasons behind it are different, but most of the times it is the pride of those who lost that does not allow them to claim otherwise.
The January Hamas Israel conflict also produced two sides declaring the victory. Unlike in other cases, this time it may actually be true. The victory on the side of Hamas would actually be just about anything other than the total defeat and decline of its forces and support. None of this happened as a result of the conflict. Hamas still has a lot of support among the controlled areas and did not take a significant blow to its potential. The prognosis is actually in its favor, more people seem to support their efforts to govern in Palestine.
On the other side of the border, the winner would be the Israeli army. They have taken a very heavy criticism domestically after the 2006 conflict with Hezbollah paramilitary forces in Lebanon. The approach to that war was very different from the resent clash with Hamas. As a result the army commanders were able to adjust and adopt new tactics. Consequently despite the similar length of the operation only 13 Israeli soldiers were killed during the operation in Gaza, in comparison to almost 120 in Lebanon. Every death is tragic and I should also mention that there were many more casualties on the side of Hezbollah and Hamas, but limiting the number of those who pay the ultimate price is always a good thing.
But perhaps the biggest gain from the entire conflict in Gaza is the fact that the two sides are coming closer to the realization that there is only one permanent way to fix this historical dispute. It is for the two nations to coexist as neighbors peacefully. This will not happen for as long as Hamas denies Israel the right to exist as an independent country. Hopefully the day this will finally happen is close.
